The Reason Eyes Appear Closer Together After Rhinoplasty!

The Reason Eyes Appear Closer Together After Rhinoplasty!

The nose serves various functional and structural roles and is an organ responsible for essential functions like breathing and olfaction. Additionally, being located at the center of the face, it significantly affects one's appearance and facial expressions.

This has led many to consider the aesthetic aspect of the nose important and opt for cosmetic changes through surgery. Many people considering rhinoplasty worry whether elevating the nasal bridge might make their eyes appear closer together.

Therefore, today, we will explore the reasons why eyes may seem closer together after rhinoplasty, addressing the concerns of those apprehensive about this effect.

Will elevating the nasal bridge through rhinoplasty cause the eyes to seem closer together?

Some people often believe that elevating the nasal bridge can cause the eyes to appear closer together. Generally, people tend to feel that the eyes appear closer together when the gap between the eyes is shorter than the width of an eye. To conclude, since the skin of the nasal bridge can stretch adequately, the actual distance between the eyes does not decrease if the surgery is performed within a normal range. In other words, the appearance of eyes getting closer together is not a common outcome after rhinoplasty.

So, if the distance between the eyes does not change due to rhinoplasty, why do the eyes appear closer together after the surgery? There are three main reasons for this phenomenon.

First, swelling immediately after the rhinoplasty

The accentuated appearance of the eyes getting closer together right after rhinoplasty is often due to post-surgical swelling. Swelling can also occur between the eyebrows right after the surgery, temporarily making the eyes appear closer together. Usually, the major swelling after rhinoplasty subsides within about a week, but minor swelling can persist for 3 to 6 months, leading many to think their eyes appear closer together. This eye closeness following rhinoplasty improves once the residual swelling completely subsides, and the time it takes for swelling to reduce can vary from person to person.

However, if the eyes still appear closer together even after the swelling has subsided, the cause might be the horizontal length of the eyes or the distance between them. If the horizontal length of the eyes is short and the space between them is narrower than average, the eyes may appear closer together as the nose becomes higher and more defined. In such cases, surgery like lateral canthoplasty, which extends the horizontal length of the eyes, can improve this phenomenon, so it's advisable to decide after thorough consultation with medical professionals.

Second, visual changes due to an elevated nasal bridge

When rhinoplasty is performed, it adds dimensionality between the eyes, making them appear visually closer together.  Especially if the nasal bridge was low, shadows may form as the previously low bridge is raised. This creates a visual change, making the gap between the eyes appear narrower, leading to the perception of eyes looking closer together after rhinoplasty. Also, even if the actual distance between the eyes does not decrease, inserting implants like silicone can make them appear closer, so it's important to consider this aspect when planning the surgery.

Third, in cases of excessively elevating the nose

Eyes may also appear closer together when the height of the nose is relatively too high. If the phenomenon of eyes appearing closer together after rhinoplasty is severe, it might be suspected that the nose was raised too high. This happens because, if only the prominent nasal line from the side view is considered and the bridge is excessively raised, the skin in front of the eyes is stretched, making the eyes appear closer together when viewed from the front.

To prevent this, it's necessary to consider the gap between the eyebrows and set the nose according to facial balance through adequate consultation with experienced medical professionals. Today, we explored the reasons why eyes may appear closer together after rhinoplasty, for those who are concerned about this possibility.  I hope this has been somewhat helpful to those curious about eye closeness following rhinoplasty.

Everything You Need to Know Before Getting a Nose Job in Korea [Jayjun Plastic Surgery Q&A]

Everything You Need to Know Before Getting a Nose Job in Korea [Jayjun Plastic Surgery Q&A] Today, we have compiled clear answers from a Jayjun Plastic Surgery specialist in Korea to frequently asked questions by patients who are considering rhinoplasty.  Please note that surgical methods and outcomes may vary depending on the individual, so use this information as a general guide. Q1. Can the nasal tip be raised and improved naturally using only septal cartilage? Yes, it can be possible, although it depends on individual conditions. In the past, surgeries were done using only septal cartilage, and even now, if the conditions allow, natural and sophisticated results can be achieved with septal cartilage alone. However, if the nose is very small or upturned (short nose), cartilage alone may not provide enough support, so a stronger structure is needed to fix the tip. In such cases, rib cartilage (autologous or donated) may be used. In principle, if there are no major nasal issue...
