Even if people have similar facial features, the impression they give can vary greatly depending on their facial shape. In reality, even if individual features such as the eyes, nose, and mouth are beautiful, if the overall face is large and angular, it often doesn't harmonize well, which can be disappointing. Thus, recently, there has been growing interest in contour surgery that can transform the face into a smaller and sharper shape, just as with other facial parts. Especially, as more people desire a sleek V-line jaw, many are looking into Genioplasty.

If the length of the chin tip is excessively long compared to the overall contour, it gives an aged or strong impression. If it's too short, it gives an unclear feel. Hence, many want to improve these aspects to achieve an ideal proportion through Genioplasty. Such Genioplasty can be described as an effective surgical method that makes a broad, short, or relatively long jawline smoother and sharper. Depending on various types such as broad jaw, shovel jaw, or no-jaw, appropriate surgical methods need to be chosen to produce a natural-looking jawline.

1. Wide jaw TYPE

First, for a broad jaw, the horizontal part, or the width of the jaw, is broad, which gives an angular impression. In such cases, by reducing the chin tip and narrowing the width, a V-line can be created through the T osteotomy or the ㅅ osteotomy.

The T osteotomy is a method of cutting the chin bone end into a T shape to make it slim, while the ㅅ osteotomy cuts the chin tip in a ㅅ shape, reducing its length and making the sides slimmer. Generally, most broad jaw surgeries are improved through the T osteotomy, and it's effective in reducing the wide facial area and transforming it into a sleeker jawline.

2. Long and large jaw (Lantern Jaw) TYPE

Regarding lantern jaws that appear long compared to the overall face, there are generally two types: one where the teeth align but the jaw itself is elongated and another where the teeth don't align, causing the lower teeth to protrude forwards. For lantern jaws where the teeth align properly, improvements can be made through Front Jaw Surgery, but for those where the teeth don't align, surgeries like orthognathic surgery can be used for correction.

Thus, for those with aligned teeth and an elongated lantern jaw, improvements can be made by cutting the tip of the jaw bone with two horizontal osteotomy lines, reducing its vertical width. When reducing the vertical width, if the protrusion feels strong, not only can the width be reduced, but the protruding part of the front jaw bone can also be slightly pushed back and fixed. Therefore, to achieve the ideal side profile, during lantern jaw surgery, not only is the vertical part important, but deciding how much to push back the horizontally protruding part or leave it natural is also crucial.

3. Small and receded jaw (Jawless) TYPE

"Jawless" refers to a condition where the lower jaw bone is small and receded, resulting in a less distinct facial contour. In such cases, the boundary between the neck and face isn't clear, leading to a blunt facial line, which can become an aesthetic complex. In these situations, the jaw bone can be cut and extended, and once the desired length is secured, it can be refixed using Front Jaw Surgery or an implant shaped like a jaw bone can be inserted through an intraoral incision for natural improvement.

Such Genioplasty, as mentioned, must be performed tailored to the type to maintain overall facial balance and obtain satisfactory results. Therefore, rather than just considering and improving the tip of the jaw, depending on whether it's a wide jaw, lantern jaw, or jawless, it's essential to adjust the jawbone's length and position according to the ideal facial proportions to naturally form the jawline.

It can be deemed advisable to thoroughly understand one's condition through experienced medical staff and 3D-CT imaging, and establish an appropriate surgical plan through detailed consultation.

The face is not only important for aesthetics but also vital for functionality and safety. Therefore, it's crucial to meticulously plan for a surgery that aligns with one's facial characteristics and constitution to achieve the ideal sleek V-line jawline.

Everything You Need to Know Before Getting a Nose Job in Korea [Jayjun Plastic Surgery Q&A]

Everything You Need to Know Before Getting a Nose Job in Korea [Jayjun Plastic Surgery Q&A] Today, we have compiled clear answers from a Jayjun Plastic Surgery specialist in Korea to frequently asked questions by patients who are considering rhinoplasty.  Please note that surgical methods and outcomes may vary depending on the individual, so use this information as a general guide. Q1. Can the nasal tip be raised and improved naturally using only septal cartilage? Yes, it can be possible, although it depends on individual conditions. In the past, surgeries were done using only septal cartilage, and even now, if the conditions allow, natural and sophisticated results can be achieved with septal cartilage alone. However, if the nose is very small or upturned (short nose), cartilage alone may not provide enough support, so a stronger structure is needed to fix the tip. In such cases, rib cartilage (autologous or donated) may be used. In principle, if there are no major nasal issue...
