Symptoms After Rhinoplasty:
How to Tell What's Normal vs. a Warning Sign
Various changes can occur after rhinoplasty due to swelling and the healing process.
Most of these changes are a normal part of recovery, but some require prompt evaluation by your surgeon. In this article, we'll briefly explain which symptoms after rhinoplasty are normal and which may require medical attention.
Normal Symptoms That Are Usually Nothing to Worry About
The following changes are commonly seen after rhinoplasty.
✔ A Firm Nasal Tip
As the tissues heal after rhinoplasty, scar tissue forms, making the tip of the nose feel firm. This is a normal part of the healing process and usually becomes softer over the course of about three to four months.
✔ The Nose Appears Crooked
Early after surgery, swelling does not decrease evenly on both sides, making the nose appear crooked. In addition, subtle asymmetry that existed before surgery may become more noticeable after the bridge is elevated.
Immediately after the splint is removed, the nasal tip may appear lifted, or the nose may look overly elevated. This is caused by swelling of the columella and internal tissues and usually settles into a more natural appearance within two to three weeks.
✔ Changes in the Color of the Nasal Tip
After surgery, stretching of the skin and tissue changes may temporarily reduce blood circulation. As a result, the nasal tip may appear red or look bluish because of bruising. In most cases, these changes improve naturally over time.
✔ Nasal Congestion
After rhinoplasty, scabs and nasal secretions commonly cause temporary nasal congestion. Trying to remove the scabs yourself may injure the nasal lining, so caution is advised. If the discomfort is significant, it's safest to have them removed by your surgeon.
✔ Pain
Rhinoplasty is generally not considered a highly painful procedure. However, as the tissues stretch and the nasal structure heals, you may experience tightness or a dull aching sensation.
This type of discomfort is a normal part of recovery and gradually improves over time.
Warning Signs That Should Be Evaluated by Your Surgeon
Most normal postoperative symptoms improve naturally over time. However, if something changes suddenly during recovery, you should contact your surgeon.
⚠ The Nose Suddenly Becomes Very Red
Mild redness caused by early postoperative swelling can be normal. But if the redness suddenly becomes severe or spreads to the surrounding area, an infection or inflammation should be ruled out.
⚠ Sudden Warmth
If the nose suddenly feels hot and warm to the touch, it may indicate something more than routine swelling.
Prompt evaluation is recommended.
⚠ Sudden Severe Pain
Unlike the expected dull discomfort during recovery, sudden sharp or severe pain should be evaluated immediately.
⚠ Sudden Significant Swelling
Swelling normally decreases gradually over time.
If swelling suddenly worsens on one side or throughout the nose during recovery, you should contact your surgeon promptly.
The Key Word Is Sudden
The common feature of most warning signs is that they occur suddenly.
Sudden redness
Sudden warmth
Sudden pain
Sudden swelling
If any of these occur, the safest approach is to take photos and contact your surgeon for advice. This is one of the most important things to remember after rhinoplasty.
Most postoperative symptoms are simply part of the normal healing process.
The key is to pay attention only if something changes suddenly. If you're concerned, don't try to judge it on your own. Contact your surgeon so it can be evaluated promptly.
Because every patient heals differently after rhinoplasty, maintaining ongoing communication with your surgical team is the most important part of a safe recovery.
